Chris from Coquitlam learned the hard way. One morning, mid-January, his tire blew out on the highway. Luckily, no one was hurt. When we checked his tires, they were 12 PSI below the recommended level, likely due to a recent cold snap.
Tires aren’t just rubber circles. They’re complex, engineered to support your vehicle and ensure traction, especially in BC’s varying climate. Here’s how to take care of them:
In Winter:
1. Expect Pressure Drops Every 5°C drop in temperature can lower tire pressure by 1-2 PSI. Low pressure reduces grip, increases wear, and raises fuel consumption.
Do this: Check your tire pressure every two weeks. Fill them to the PSI listed inside your driver’s door frame — not the tire sidewall.
2. Use Winter Tires All-seasons get stiff in the cold. Winter tires stay soft and flexible below 7°C, improving traction, handling, and stopping distance.
3. Avoid Sudden Maneuvers Snow, ice, and rain mean less grip. Avoid harsh braking and quick lane changes.
In Summer:
1. Check for Over-Inflation Heat expands air inside tires. Over-inflated tires wear unevenly and can even burst under highway speed.
Tip: Check pressure when tires are cold, preferably in the morning before driving.
2. Rotate Tires Regularly Rotation promotes even wear, extends tire life, and maintains alignment. We recommend rotating every 8,000 to 10,000 km.
3. Store Winter Tires Properly Keep them in a cool, dry place. Use tire totes or bags to reduce exposure to sunlight and ozone.
Year-Round Tips:
- Check tread depth monthly. Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread — if you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires.
- Inspect for cracks, bulges, or foreign objects.
- Don’t forget the spare tire!
Conclusion: Chris now checks his pressure twice a month and never skips rotations. You can do the same. It’s not just about tire life — it’s about your safety and your wallet.
